They often work for legitimate companies, medical offices, clinics, pharmacies and government agencies. They dream up innovative ways to trick people into revealing personal information (Social Security numbers, bank routing and account numbers, credit card account numbers and security codes, etc.). Some pretend to represent institutions consumers typically trust and try to trick people into revealing personal information by phone, email or in person, says the Federal Trade Commission.
