Consumer page: Look closely at credit reports to ensure your identity hasn’t been stolen

Identity thieves are resourceful — as they rummage through curbside garbage, business trash and public dumps — but they're not looking for recently expired yogurt. They're looking for fresh numbers and names of the foolish who trash important info unshredded.

They often work for legitimate companies, medical offices, clinics, pharmacies and government agencies. They dream up innovative ways to trick people into revealing personal information (Social Security numbers, bank routing and account numbers, credit card account numbers and security codes, etc.). Some pretend to represent institutions consumers typically trust and try to trick people into revealing personal information by phone, email or in person, says the Federal Trade Commission.
